When you plan to share your notes created in Windows Journal, you have several options to consider. Windows Journal saves notes in one of the following formats: Windows Journal Note, MHTML, and TIFF. The ideal format to choose depends on your recipient’s available software.
Windows Journal Note
This is the native file format for Windows Journal. Saving in this file format results in a compact file size and preserves all formatting options and can be edited in Windows Journal in the future. Windows Journal is included in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, and certain version of Windows Vista (Home Premium, Business, Business N, Enterprise and Ultimate.) For other versions of Windows, you can download the free Windows Journal Viewer for full-fidelity viewing of your notes. Use this option if you are sure that your recipient has Windows Journal or Windows Journal Viewer installed on his/her computer.
MHTML
Unfortunately Windows Journal Viewer is currently only available for the Windows platform. To share your notes across other operating systems, you should consider using MHTML. Notes saved in this format can be opened by all the major Internet browsers as if it were a webpage, and has navigational tools to browse through multiple pages. However, all formatting options are lost and you cannot edit the resulting file directly in Windows Journal. Use this option for maximum compatibility and for notes containing color images.
TIFF
Saving in this file format will turn your notes into black and white and reduces image quality. Files are smaller than MHTML and can be opened by nearly all graphics programs and Internet browsers. Page browsing is preserved when viewed through a supported program. Like MHTML, you cannot edit the resulting file directly in Windows Journal. Ideal for notes containing large amounts of text and few to no color images.
If in doubt, you may consider sharing your notes in two formats: one in Windows Journal Note format and another in one of the other formats for maximum flexibility.
